About the Work

Presence, impermanence, and quiet beauty

My specific energy is not for everyone, but the people who resonate with it tend to connect with it very strongly. I think the same is true of my paintings. They feel special because that energy carries so much of who I am — a common undercurrent that runs through every piece, whether the subject is a peony from the garden or a cup of tea on the breakfast table.

I paint from life, slowly, and often with subjects I have gathered myself. What I hope you feel is the moment — full of life but already beginning to change — and the quiet reverence that made me want to paint it in the first place.

Julie DeFazio

“A painting can hold more than a likeness — it can carry the essence of a person, a flower, or a fleeting moment.”

I'm a self-taught painter whose work explores presence, impermanence, and quiet beauty. After returning to painting while raising my young son, I've embraced a slower creative practice shaped by both motherhood and curiosity.

My work is rooted in the belief that a painting can hold more than a likeness — it can carry the essence of a person, a flower, or a fleeting moment. That is what I chase, one canvas at a time.

The Practice

How the work comes together

Florals from the Garden 01
Painted from life

Florals from the Garden

Peonies, roses, and gathered wildflowers — most from my own garden, painted while they are still full of life but already beginning to change. The work honors that fleeting stage, when beauty is at its most compelling because it is temporary.

A Slower Practice 02
Rooted in presence

A Slower Practice

I returned to painting while raising my young son, and that shaped everything. My studio time is unhurried and considered — a slower rhythm that lets a subject reveal itself rather than being rushed through. Each piece takes as long as it needs to.

Oil and Acrylic on Linen 03
Traditional materials

Oil and Acrylic on Linen

Original works painted in oil on linen or acrylic on canvas, using time-honored materials chosen for their depth of color and longevity. Rich pigment, subtle shifts in light, and visible brushwork are what I care about most.

Essence Over Likeness 04
What a painting can hold

Essence Over Likeness

I believe a painting can carry more than a likeness — it can hold the essence of a person, a flower, or a fleeting moment. That belief shapes every choice I make at the easel, from composition to the final brushstroke.

Let a painting live with you

Every piece is an original, painted slowly and by hand. When one leaves the studio, it does not come back — so if something calls to you, it is meant for you.
